In the initial stages of creating work, I set up various experiments to test movement ideas for their ability to communicate an idea or for their emotional resonance. I also devise situations in an attempt to capture a feeling or quality of moving. The first part of this video shows the initial research for my Mondo Cane! commission from Dixon Place, entitled “If You See Something...”. The clips here is our initial starting place, my first attempts toward capturing instinct and primal responses in a physical and direct way. The research process isn’t always pretty and it’s not what makes it to the stage. These are the mistakes, the bloopers. But they capture the idea of what we are working toward.

 

There are also some clips from the making of Vic and Dee, which we are reworking for the Duet Show!, a new touring program. Though I spent nearly every Saturday at the roller skating rink in Junior High, somehow I had to start from scratch, a kid again with scraped knees.
