dances and Participatory offerings during the coronavirus pandemic

Isolation/Connection

This four part dance film was created for the transitional and confining space of hallways. It reflects our feelings of isolation and desires for connection during the corona virus. Filmed at various times of day, the series reflects the available bandwidth of the internet. Four different composers have created original sound scores to accompany each version, which ranges from fairly smooth to stop action and blurry. Read more about the creation process here.

Isolation/Connection was created to express the escalating emotions experienced during the onset of the coronavirus, feeling alone, yet the strong need to connect. The setting of a hallway serves as both a safe haven and a trapped space. During the video recordings, occurring at various times of day, we came to see the inequities of internet bandwidth access based upon geography and race. In this version, you will experience the most freezes in the recording. Music for this final version, recorded at 7:35pm is by Bob Lukomski.

Recorded at 3:00pm on May 6, this version features music by Christopher North.

Recorded at 11:30am on May 4, this version features music by John Stone.

Filmed at 7:35 in the morning on April 17, the composer for this version is Mike Sayre.

Distanced Dance

Distanced Dance reflects on the six feet we are told to keep between us. Does this make us feel safe? Is it a barrier? What does it look and feel like?

#MoveWithMe

This weekly video series is designed get you moving and breathing. Moving makes us feel better. In addition to obvious physical health benefits, it can also reduce stress and anxiety, affecting our mental well being. Videos are created by Director Lynn Neuman and are released each Thursday on our YouTube Channel and range in length from 3-30 minutes.

Self-care is critically important and one of the reasons I’ve created #MoveWithMe, providing short movement experiences for you to do with the mindset of alleviating tension and stress in the body, which accumulates in uncertain and volatile times like these.

This installment allows us to use gravity as a feedback mechanism for the tension we may hold. Pay attention to what you are experiencing in this contact. If you have discomfort, take several breaths while lying on the floor, picturing your muscles melting, and then try again.

This installment of #MoveWithMe is about lengthening. It uses the action and rhythm of yawning to expand and reach the body out into space, stretching the muscles, and then contrasting this with release and relaxation.

In this #MoveWithMe, we use simple circular actions and the play of improvisation to release stagnation in the body and get ourselves breathing and moving.

This #MoveWithMe is from a live session on Zoom and Instagram. It is a bit more vigorous and creative, springing us into spring.

This longer session was given live on Earth Day 2020 and includes some of our favorite earth related songs.

This Week’s theme is swinging. Have fun and let go!

This week we explore proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation patterns for the upper body. A little brain stimulation along with the movement and breath.
This week I am inspired by water. We use waves as an impetus to action, bringing ourselves metaphorically in touch with nature.
This week we use the action of bouncing to create lightness and energy. Stay safe and keep breathing.
This week we use the action of twisting to wring tension out of the muscles and the body.
