Perils of Plastic Project
A four part project focusing on plastic pollution that involved community at all levels:
Beach clean up: engaging 125 volunteers in collecting trash on Rockaway Beach
Education and Advocacy: an expert panel on plastics and their effects on the environment and on animals and us, and petitions and call ins to elected officials supporting local and state plastics legislation
Participatory art build: an installation simulating the Great Pacific Garbage Patch create with materials collected from beach clean up and put together by 40 volunteers led by artists Lynn Neuman and Ellen Driscoll.
Spectacle performance: a man-powered traveling installation shepherded by 20 volunteers and activated by 8 dancers that won the Judge’s Choice Award at the 2024 Mermaid Parade, raising awareness about plastic pollution with over 500,000 viewers.
This project was a collaboration with Surfrider NYC and 350Brooklyn, environmental organizations.
