Perils of Plastic Project

A four part project focusing on plastic pollution that involved community at all levels:

  • Beach clean up: engaging 125 volunteers in collecting trash on Rockaway Beach

  • Education and Advocacy: an expert panel on plastics and their effects on the environment and on animals and us, and petitions and call ins to elected officials supporting local and state plastics legislation

  • Participatory art build: an installation simulating the Great Pacific Garbage Patch create with materials collected from beach clean up and put together by 40 volunteers led by artists Lynn Neuman and Ellen Driscoll.

  • Spectacle performance: a man-powered traveling installation shepherded by 20 volunteers and activated by 8 dancers that won the Judge’s Choice Award at the 2024 Mermaid Parade, raising awareness about plastic pollution with over 500,000 viewers.

This project was a collaboration with Surfrider NYC and 350Brooklyn, environmental organizations.
